Never Alone

I first heard of this song a few years back, in 2008 if memory serves me right. I recalled thinking that the song was sung by Martina McBride then. So off I went buying the CD and was disappointed to not find the song in the album. I then put the song out of my mind.

Just some time back, a friend had the song playing in her car's music player as we carpooled to one of our normal haunts with our friends. I immediately asked her on who sang the song and was told that it was a collaboration between Jim Brickman and Lady Antebellum. So, I asked her "Lady who??!!!"

Apparently Lady Antebellum is a three member country band made up of Charles Kelly, Hillary Scott & Dave Haywood. Not many would have heard of them except if you're a country music fan. Now however, they are quite well known with the title track from their latest album "Need You Now".

Now, I don't really know the story behind the band's name but the formation of the band was somewhat intriguing with Kelley formerly in construction while Scott and Haywood had famous family connections in the country music world. Do you know by the way that the word "Antebellum" refers to a period before the war?

Anyways, my post is to talk about their song, "Never Alone" which I thought was a brilliant one in the depth of the meaning, I can't think of too many song in it's class over the last decade. The few that comes to mind would probably be Josh Groban's "You Raise Me Up" along with Ronan Keating's covers of "If Tomorrow Never Comes" (originally by Garth Brooks) and "I Hope You Dance" (originally from Lee Ann Womack).
I guess the lyrics itself would be self explanatory.

May the angels protect you
Trouble neglect you
And heaven accept you when it's time to go home
May you always have plenty
Your glass never empty
Know in your belly
You're never alone

May your tears come from laughing
You find friends worth having
With every year passing
They mean more than gold
May you win but stay humble
Smile more than grumble
And know when you stumble
You're never alone

Never alone
Never alone
I'll be in every beat of your heart
When you face the unknown
Wherever you fly
This isn't goodbye
My love will follow you stay with you
Baby you're never alone

Well, I have to be honest
As much as I want it
I'm not gonna promise the cold winds won't blow
So when hard times have found you
And your fear surround you
Wrap my love around you
You're never alone

Never alone
Never alone
I'll be in every beat of your heart
When you face the unknown
Wherever you fly
This isn't goodbye
My love will follow you stay with you
Baby you're never alone

May the angels protect you
Trouble neglect you
And heaven accept you when it's time to go home
And when hard times have found you
And your fear surround you
Wrap my love around you
You're never alone

Never alone
Never alone
I'll be in every beat of your heart
When you face the unknown
Wherever you fly
This isn't goodbye
My love will follow you stay with you
Baby you're never alone
My love will follow you stay with you
Baby you're never alone

One of the most beautiful songs I have heard. Definitely one in my top 10 list of favorites....

An interesting anecdote about the song is the fact that it had its' roots from an old Irish blessing which led to the writer Victoria Shaw writing the song a few years later, She actually performed it live a few times before Brickman decided to record it. Lady Antebellum was then yet undiscovered and Shaw introduced them to Brickman who agreed to record the song as a collaboration....
