What Love Means... To Kids and To Me...

Oftentimes people tend to use the word "Love" a lot in their daily conversation. It seems that the word may have lost it's context with each passing day.

Allow me to share a personal experience as starters. After seeing each other for a while, I offered to cook her dinner one evening as she looked so tired when she walked out of her office. We drove down to a nearby hypermarket and I went on a spree to obtain all the ingredients necessary to cook dinner.

She seemed somewhat surprised with the bags of items I bought. She didn't comment but she had a smile on her face as we drove back. When we got home, I got her to take a leisurely bath and leave the cooking to me. Having taken her bath, she sneaked up on me as I was cooking and peeked over my shoulder as she asked why did I offered to cook that day?

I automatically replied and said that I did it because I loved her. Her expression changed and she looked somewhat grim. I asked her what's wrong and she said that it was the word "love". She asked me if I was sure of that I really "loved" her and it wasn't just a case on infatuation or attraction which may fade after a while.

What she said left me thinking and changed our relationship for ever. Wanna know what happened then? You have to read about it at the end of the post...

So going back to the topic at hand, this particular piece has been floating about in cyberspace for a while now, with minor variations. A group of professionals apparently posed the question " What does love means? " to a group of 4-8 years olds. The answers may just astound you...

"When my grandmother got arthritis, she couldn't bend over and paint her toenails any more. So my grandfather does it for her all the time, even when his hands got arthritis too. That's love."

"When someone loves you, the way they say your name is different. You just know that your name is safe in their mouth."

"Love is when a girl puts on perfume and a boy puts on shaving cologne and they go out and smell each other."

"Love is when you go out to eat and give somebody most of your French fries without making them give you any of theirs."

"Love is what makes you smile when you're tired."

"Love is when my mommy makes coffee for my daddy and she takes a sip before giving it to him, to make sure the taste is OK."

"Love is when you kiss all the time. Then when you get tired of kissing, you still want to be together and you talk more. My Mommy and Daddy are like that. They look gross when they kiss"

"Love is what's in the room with you at Christmas if you stop opening presents and listen."

"If you want to learn to love better, you should start with a friend who you hate," - We really need to have more kids like this one in the world...

"Love is when you tell a guy you like his shirt, then he wears it everyday."

"Love is like a little old woman and a little old man who are still friends even after they know each other so well."

"During my piano recital, I was on a stage and I was scared. I looked at all the people watching me and saw my daddy waving and smiling. He was the only one doing that. I wasn't scared anymore."

"My mommy loves me more than anybody! You don't see anyone else kissing me to sleep at night."

"Love is when Mommy gives Daddy the best piece of chicken."

"Love is when Mommy sees Daddy smelly and sweaty and still says he is handsomer than Robert Redford."

"Love is when your puppy licks your face even after you left him alone all day."

"I know my older sister loves me because she gives me all her old clothes and has to go out and buy new ones."

"When you love somebody, your eyelashes go up and down and little stars come out of you."

"Love is when Mommy sees Daddy on the toilet and she doesn't think it's gross."

"You really shouldn't say 'I love you' unless you mean it. But if you mean it, you should say it a lot. People forget."

And the final one -- Author and lecturer Leo Buscaglia once talked about a contest he was asked to judge. The purpose of the contest was to find the most caring child. The winner was a four year old child whose next door neighbor was an elderly gentleman who had recently lost his wife.
Upon seeing the man cry, the little boy went into the old gentleman's yard, climbed onto his lap, and just sat there.
When his Mother asked what he had said to the neighbor, the little boy said, "Nothing, I just helped him cry"

So, what happened then with the relationship? I was left somewhat dumbstruck for a few moments at what she had to say. And I started thinking about the times we spent together laughing, smiling, talking, fantasizing, crying, hoping and praying... And I realized at that point as well that I have finally found the one I wanted to spend my lifetime with...

So I told her that yes, I was sure that I loved her and I would really really hope and pray that the feeling's mutual. Her eyes started to water and she said that it was what she wanted too... And we never let a day go by without saying those three words to each other.

When a friend once asked what was the secret to our close relationship, I told him of what happened then... His only question at the end of it was, "Did she like the dinner you cooked her?"

Well, the tofu and veggies she enjoyed... But I was cooking the chicken when she posed me the question. It ended up burned... But we finished it anyway and she said it tasted good regardless... Is that love? You tell me...
