St Michael the Archangel

"Now war arose in heaven, Michael and his angels fighting against the dragon. And the dragon and his angels fought back, but he was defeated, and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world – he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him."

In the course of my browsing to obtain information on St Michael's Church, Ipoh I came across a few websites as well as Wikipedia entries which touched on St Michael the Archangel.

While I was brought up in a Catholic family and was schooled in a mission school, I was never someone well versed with the intricacies of the religion. If I were asked to name the archangels, I would stop at Michael and Gabriel, commonly associated with the Annunciation.

As such, the information which I came across was of extreme interest to me. The photo above is one of St Michael slaying the dragon. If you notice the wording on the shield, you can just make out the words "Quis ut Deus".

Again, I'd like to reiterate that I am not an expert but the substance of what I write can be found with some effort on the net. Apparently, the words in Latin emblazoned on the shield is translated to mean "who is like God" which is a literal translation of the name Michael from Hebrew.

Sometimes, the wordings on the shield is said to be "Quis et Deus" which would mean "I am like God". It is said that this was Michael's reply to Lucifer when Lucifer stated that he (Lucifer) will not serve God.

St Michael is normally depicted in arts as an angelic warrior in helmet, battle armor and shield bearing a sword. In the book of Revelation, a dragon is identified as the ancient serpent who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world. The shield that Michael bears is usually depicted with the words "Quis ut Deus" which is meant to be a rhetorical and scornful question which he poses to Satan before slaying him.

Pictured above is the scapular of St Michael the Archangel which bears the words "Quis ut Deus". It is said that the form of this scapular is also unique as the cloth are made to form the shield consists of one in black and the other in blue.

Having done a somewhat detailed research into the Archangel, it would be a remiss of me should I not share the prayer to St Michael. It was previously recited at the end of every Mass before that was ended in 1964. Pope John Paul II however asks that everyone not forget the prayer and to continue to recite it to obtain help against the forces of darkness.

Sancte Michael Archangele
(Saint Michael the Archangel)
defende nos in proelio
(defend us in battle)
contra nequitiam et insidias diaboli esto praesidium
(be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil)
Imperet illi Deus, supplices deprecamur
(May God rebuke him, we humbly pray)
tuque, Princeps militiae Caelestis
(and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host)
satanam aliosque spiritus malignos
(by the power of God)
qui ad perditionem animarum pervagantur in mundo
(thrust into hell Satan and all the evil spirits)
divina virtute in infernum detrude
(who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls)
Amen

Note: As this post was based on information scoured on the net, there may be some inaccuracies in the telling. For that, I'm truly sorry. Please feel free to point out any inaccuracies and/or mistakes and I'd happily change them... :)
