I feel somewhat in the dumps today... It's already May for goodness sake!!!
A third of the year has passed us by in what seemed like a flash. Christmas, New Year as well as Easter had gone by and before we realize it, we'll be starting to warm our vocal chords to sing those carols at year end.
As I sit here at my terminal, I envy those who can spend their Labor Day holiday with a day off. Of course, being a Saturday, it may not be as enjoyable for the school going kids, but it's still a holiday anyway...
I worked through this holiday for the past two years, so it isn't that much of a new experience for me. So that can't be the reason why I feel like crawling under the covers and going back to sleep.
Flipping through yesterday's papers just minutes ago, I finally pinpointed the source of this misery. It lies at the soles of my feet... Literally!
My eyes were drawn to an advert on the Crocs warehouse sale being held this weekend at Ikano in Damansara. Now how does a sale literally make me sulk you may ask. The answer lies in a pair of "Wraith".
I got myself a pair of this last year in the midst of some personal crisis and upheaval. It was my first pair of Crocs. I was never a fan of Crocs before I used this but now I steadfastly stand by it. And I even went as far as buying them as gifts with 4 pairs given away for Christmas last year.
Well, I first heard of Crocs sometime in late 2007. I remembered seeing those hideously bulbous sandals started mushrooming around. In the office, I had 3 colleagues who swears by them to the extent that they own several pairs each.
There were skeptics in the office too. A close friend said that he wouldn't spend close to RM200 for a pair of ugly rubber sandals. When the company had a team building exercise in rainy November that year, I started to wonder if the sandals were really that good.
One of the Crocs fan decided to test his off road Crocs at the jungle trek which took us a good 4 hours to complete despite the relatively short distance of about 1.5 kms. Reason being the trek required us to walk downhill along a relatively tame path before we start the climb up through jungle trails, after a heavy downpour.
As the group of 40 comprised of some 30 gals, the guys were expected to ensure that there were helping hands all around to assist in climbing those slippery slopes aided by some stout climbing ropes.
This strenuous and physically challenging activity posed no problem for the offroad Crocs where some other shoes failed. As I had the foresight to bring a pair of rubber beach sandals in anticipation of the possible need, my pair of Nike ACG shoes ended up being used by a gal whose feet was at least 4 or 5 size smaller. Reason being her pair of sneakers just decided to give up on her halfway through the course. She still gets teased for her clown shoes moment... :)
As if that wasn't enough a challenge for the Crocs footwear, it was handily used for an abseil down the rocky face of the cliff after lunch that day. That left quite an impression and I wondered then if it was really worth the money.
That all changed when I met my other half. She came by for a meet up to discuss our group's follow up plans for the weekend in a pair of espresso colored Crocs. When we started going out a while later, I noticed she had another pair of Crocs in her car.
As such I asked her if the sandals were really all that good as she was a very conscientious spender. And she told me that they really really last and are comfortable. She has used them for several years daily in her commute to and from work.
That practically convinced me that I should try them out. And my first pair of Crocs was the Wraith. And I loved in from day 1. Whenever the occasion didn't require me to use a pair of shoes, Crocs became my choice.
I use them for the weekend jaunts, to run any errands or simply walking to the convenience store to get the newspapers. I actually went on several vacations and weekend getaways armed only with the Wraith as my footwear.
Unfortunately, as I walked to the shopping mall yesterday, I stepped on a wet patch on the floor and I slipped. Nothing serious or embarrassing as I managed to recover just in time. However, I inspected the sole of the Crocs when I got home and saw that there's a flat spot on the soles of the Wraith.
Regrettably, it means that the time is up. She suggested that I resoled the sandals at the cobbler by adding a layer of rubber glues to the soles but I know that it would never be the same again.
When I walked out of the house this morning, I was wearing a pair of Wraith, a new pair. I got myself a spare pair when I saw that they had the black pair in stock at the Lot 10 outlet. Incidentally, I also got myself a pair of black Trailback at the same time.
As for the pairs that I gave away? Dad got an Offroad, mum got a Cyprus, big bro got a Trailbreak, albeit in brown and she got a pair of espresso coloured Lily...
It's a bit sad considering that it was my first pair ever, but I guess I'm somewhat comforted by a line in Bon Jovi's "Welcome To Wherever You Are" which went like this;
"Remember every new beginning, in some beginning's end..."
Now isn't that an awesome line for a song? Ditto... I'll write about it next I guess while I strip away the remaining hours I have to be on standby duty this gloriously sunny holiday...
